The Department of Electrical Engineering welcomes its newest members of the faculty Dr. Andrew Fierro and Dr. Qingsong Cui.

Dr. Fierro joins us from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at The University of New Mexico.  He graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX in 2015 with his PhD in Electrical Engineering where he focused on GPU implementations of kinetic plasma codes.  Afterwards, Dr. Fierro was a postdoctoral appointee at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM in the Optical and Plasma Sciences group developing simulation models of high energy arc faults, plasma formation on the Z-machine, and charging of particles in a plasma environment.  In his spare time, Dr. Fierro enjoys playing ice hockey, snowboarding, playing golf, and watching movies. 

Dr. Cui comes to us from Valdosta State University, where he worked as an Assistant Professor of Engineering. In his spare time, Dr. Cui enjoys traveling to explore new destinations and spending time outdoors with his family.

The Department of Electrical Engineering welcomes Dr. Krishna Chandra Roy as its newest member of the faculty. Dr. Roy joined New Mexico Tech as an Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering at the start of the Fall 2022 semester. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2021 and 2022, respectively, and B.Sc. degree in electronics and communication engineering from Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh in 2014. His primary research areas are cybersecurity and AI security with a focus on human factors and associated impacts on cybersecurity and cyber-psychological assessment in cyber threat detection. He will be teaching EE 311 (Signals and Linear Systems) during his first semester. His office is Workman Center 225, so faculty, staff and students are encouraged to stop by, say hello and welcome him.

In June of 2022, high school students from far and wide descended on the Tech campus for a week-long STEM course. A dozen of those students found themselves in the hub of the Electrical Engineering department, the Digital Lab. The topic? Transforming Solar Power to Usable Electricity. Taught by Chris Pauli, the class tinkered with basic electric circuits, puzzled over the simple, yet magical diode, and finally worked to remove much of the mystery from solar power. Each student left with a small yet functional solar station to allow further investigation back home. There were lessons learned, questions asked, and in the end a sense that everyone left having learned something new.  

 

Seniors in the electrical engineering program presented the outcome of their capstone design projects to the advisory board, customers, faculty, staff, students, family, and friends on the afternoon of April 22, 2022. The well-attended, in-person event consisted of a poster session, presentations, and reception. The senior class composed of 19 students was divided into five teams to address projects sponsored by the Department of Chemical Engineering, Institute for Complex Additive Systems Analysis, Meta, Nangeroni Design and Sandia National Laboratories. The department congratulates the students on the quality of their designs and presentations, thanks the sponsors for their participation and providing significant projects, and wishes the seniors the best with their future endeavors after graduation.
