Additional Requirements
Students who wish to pursue graduate degrees in Petroleum Engineering at New Mexico Tech are expected to demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge required for an ABET accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. For students with a B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering from an accredited program, no additional courses are required unless requested by the student's advisory committee. As a requirement students entering the graduate program with a degree in another engineering field must take the following additional courses:
- PETR 311 - Drilling Engineering
- PETR 370 - Reservoir Evaluation
- PETR 424 - Production Engineering
- PETR 445 - Reservoir Engineering II
Prerequisites for these courses are specified in the New Mexico Tech catalog. These
prerequisites are not required to be taken for credit; however, knowledge of the material
contained in the prerequisites is assumed in the upper level courses. Two of these
400 level courses may be applied to the degree plan.
Students with degrees in science must also complete an engineering science requirement.
This requirement may be satisfied by passing the Fundamentals-of-Engineering (FE)
examination or by completing the following courses:
- ES 216 - Fluid Mechanics
- ES 301 - Statics
- ES 302 - Mechanics of Materials
- ES 303 - Dynamics
- ES 347 - Thermodynamics
Students with no geology courses are required to complete:
- ERTH 460 - Petroleum & Subsurface Geology.
