by George Zamora
SANTA FE, Feb. 23, 2005 – The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents has approved a $503,500 roofing contract, awarded to low-bidder HRT Roofing & Construction, to begin repair work on the research university’s historic red-tile roofs which were severely damaged by a hailstorm last October.
An additional contract to repair some of the Tech campus buildings’ exterior walls damaged by that same hailstorm was also approved by regents during their February 16 meeting in Santa Fe. File L/P Inc. was the contractor awarded the project with its sole bid submitted of $247,174.
The board of regents further gave its approval for both repair contracts to be included in not-to-exceed orders of $1 million each, allowing the university to continue hiring those same contracting firms for additional repairs of other campus buildings which were not included in the original contracts.
In addition, the New Mexico Tech Board of Regents also awarded a contract to Bradbury & Stamm Construction, Inc. for the Cramer Hall renovation and addition project. The contractor submitted a low bid of $6,823,969 for the construction project that will completely refurbish and upgrade the historic building that was built in 1928.
Another contract to procure equipment and installation of the mechanical and control systems for a new chiller plant addition on the New Mexico Tech campus also was approved by the board of regents. Hanna Plumbing won the contract with a low bid of $1,203,772.
The addition to the university’s chiller plant is necessary, regents were told, to increase the capacity to service the new Joseph A. Fidel Student Services Center.
In other official actions taken by the New Mexico Tech Board of Regents, the board voted to approve the following measures:
- the purchase of 31.5 acre-feet of water rights for $157,000 for the university’s future needs;
- the appointment of Sayavur I. Bakhtiyarov to the full-time, tenure-track faculty position of associate professor of mechanical engineering; and
- the appointment of Dongwan Shin to the full-time, tenure-track faculty position of assistant professor of computer science.
The board of regents also approved granting degrees to a list of 91 candidates who had fulfilled their degree requirements at New Mexico Tech in December at the end of the 2004 Fall Semester.
The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents also was informed that a sabbatical leave had been granted to Peter S. Mozley, associate professor of geology with the university’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
