A Word from our Department Chair

Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (MTLS) is a small but well-known department that dates back to the earliest years of the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology (New Mexico Tech).  For much of its history it was a metallurgy department with emphasis in the critical field of extractive metallurgy, the science of winning metal from mineral.  In recent decades, the department expanded in scope to include physical metallurgy (the science of alloying) and specialty processing (including explosive welding and additive manufacturing), ceramic engineering, polymer science and nanomaterials.

It is surprising that many students have never heard of materials engineering as a discipline because engineered materials play crucial roles in our everyday lives, the security of our nation and the exploration of new frontiers.   Almost every major technology begins with the invention of a new or improved material.  Our graduates find gainful employment at places like Los Alamos National Labs, Sandia National Labs, National Institute of Standards and Technology, US Navy, Intel Corp., Westinghouse, or pursue graduate degrees at prestigious universities such as Penn State, University of Florida, Purdue University, Georgia Tech, as well as New Mexico Tech.  Some even pursue careers as doctors of medicine or dentistry, developing special expertise in biomedical materials.

To put yourself at the forefront of the next high tech, consider joining our MTLS team to understand the mysteries of metallurgy, the secrets of ceramics, the possibilities for polymers and the quandaries of quantum materials.  Probe the nanomaterial world with high powered microscopes, or create energetic propulsion materials that will be used to explore new worlds.

The small class sizes and ample opportunity for research in MTLS means you get to know your professors, and they get to know you, forging what can be lasting relationships throughout your professional career.   We hope you will choose us to help guide you on your way.
