In the current model students are paid a salary and they are responsible for paying their tuition. With tuition remission, a percentage of the tuition is paid directly from the grant or account funding the assistantship.

Tuition remission is paid at 100% for students on 20 hours/week contracts and at 50% for students on 10 hours/week contracts. The Percentage of tuition remission should be commensurate with the student's level of effort on each award charged.

The total assistantship package remains the same. For example, if you have an offer letter for two semesters as a TA at 20 hours/week, your original offer letter would have an amount of $25,125 and under the new model your package would be $17,121 plus tuition $8,004 which adds up to the $25,125. The only difference is whether the student will be paying the tuition from their salary or if a portion will be paid from the fund supporting the student.

Contract will be modified to use tuition remission starting Fall 2023.

For any proposals that will be submitted starting July 1^st, 2023, faculty and principle investigators should have a line item specifically for tuition. On current grants, they will need to work with Sponsored Research to make sure that agencies approve the change on the current grants.

Since tuition is overhead exempt, when submitting a Sponsored Project, principle investigators will be able allocate the overhead savings to other places in the budget.

No. GDP is a plan designed to support students by taking tuition payment directly from their pay check. Under the new model, the GDP will be replaced with optional payment plans that can be used for fees and tuition for students that don’t have full tuition remission.
