Four faculty members receive tenure and promotion to associate professor; two promoted to full professor

SOCORRO, N.M. – The New Mexico Tech Board of Regents recently approved tenure and promotion for six faculty members. Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael Jackson announced the faculty tenure decisions and promotions at the May 12, 2023, Board of Regents meeting. Faculty members receiving tenure and promotion from assistant professor to associate professor are:

Caitano da Silva, Ph.D. - Dr. da Silva is an associate professor in the Department of Physics. He earned his bachelor’s in physics Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (Federal University of Santa Maria) in Santa Maria, Brazil; his master’s degree in space geophysics from Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (National Institute for Space Research) in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil; and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Pennsylvania State University in University Park, Pennsylvania.

Alexander Gysi, Ph.D.
Alex Gysi, Ph.D.

Alex Gysi, Ph.D. - Dr. Gysi has a dual appointment as an economic geologist in the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources and as an associate professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science. He is the head of the Ore Deposits and Critical Minerals experimental laboratory (ODCM Lab) and research group in the bureau. He earned his M.Sc. in mineralogy and petrology at ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in  Switzerland, and his Ph.D. in geochemistry from the University of Iceland.

Kooktae Lee, Ph.D. - Dr. Lee is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.  He earned bachelor of science and master’s degrees from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea. He received a doctorate from Aerospace Engineering at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

Ramyaa, Ph.D.

Ramyaa, Ph.D. – Dr. Ramyaa is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. She earned a bachelor of engineering degree in computer science from Mandurai Kamaraj University in India, a master of science degree in artificial intelligence and a master of science degree in computer science from the University of Georgia, and a Ph.D. in computer science from Indiana University.

Faculty members receiving a promotion from associate professor to full professor:

Anders Jorgensen, Ph.D. - Dr.  Jorgensen is a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. He earned a bachelor of science degree in physics and chemistry from Aarhus University, Denmark, and a Ph.D. in astronomy with a specialization in space physics from Boston University in Massachusetts.

Michaelann Tartis, Ph.D.

Michaelann Tartis, Ph.D. – Dr. Tartis is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and is department chair. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from New Mexico Tech and a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of California, Davis.
